Titre: Fit out of the Shackleton Museum Athy,. Co. Kildare
Description: Introduction Housed in a stunningly restored 300-year-old building, The Shackleton Museum Athy is destined to become one of the world’s great polar museums, and the only one dedicated to the greatest explorer of them all, Ernest Shackleton. Born close to the village of Kilkea, between Castledermot and Athy, County Kildare in 1874, Ernest Shackleton is renowned for his courage, his care of his comrades, his immense contribution as an explorer, and for the epic escape from the shipwrecked Endurance where, against all odds, Shackleton brought his entire Polar team home across ice and ocean without losing a man. Located in the heritage town of Athy, Co Kildare, The Shackleton Museum is less than an hour from Dublin, served by commuter trains from Dublin’s largest railway hub Heuston Station. The new Museum will tell the story of Shackleton’s epic adventures using the latest technology combined with the Museum’s unsurpassed artefact collections, gathered and curated for over 100 years. Research, education, and outreach... This new development also sees the creation of a dedicated research wing, including facilities for archive storage and study which will be available to Polar scholars from across the globe. A new outreach and education programme will take the Shackleton story to thousands of school children every year. The Shackleton Museum is also home to the world-famous Shackleton Autumn School, established to commemorate the explorer in the county of his birth. It provides a forum for the discussion of polar exploration and the presentation of artistic work relevant to Shackleton and polar exploration. Where we have come from... The Shackleton Museum is the brainchild of the Athy Heritage Company, a community-run project which gained full Museum Status in 2016. The project is being run by Kildare County Council. In 2018, Mirador Media was commissioned to develop a feasibility study, business, and interpretative plan for the proposed redevelopment of the Museum. In parallel, Reddy Architects was tasked with architectural design leading into a Part 8 planning application successfully lodged in 2019. A successful application for funding was made through the Rural Regeneration Development Fund and following a competitive tender process in 2020, Mirador Media was tasked with the detailed design of the visitor experience whilst O’Brien Finucane Architects (OBFA) won the contract for the detailed design of the building. Construction work is now underway at the museum and tenders are being sought for the exhibition manufacture and fit-out. Specifications The upcoming fitout of the museum will incorporate: a) Display cases and cabinetry b) Scenic works and scenic lighting c) Artefact display works (on the critical path but not part of this tender) d) Audiovisuals and interactives e) Printing and sign-making A tender pack will issue for these requirements comprising a pricing requirement and a qualitative submission. This will be done on a price / quality ratio basis. Tender documentation will contain all necessary information for tenderers. However, in the interests of equity, requests for additional information, clarification of content of this document and all other queries will only be entertained after the publication of the tender packs on e-tenders. Indicative budget The manufacturing and fit-out budget is in the region of €700,000 exclusive of VAT. This is a fixed price budget inclusive of all fees/expenses etc. The breakdown per lot is estimated as follows: Works contract • Display Cases & Cabinetry: c.20% of project value • Scenic Works & Lighting: c.40% of project value • Printing & Signmaking: c.10% of project value Goods & Services contract • AVs & Interactives: c.30% of project value (of which 60% goods, 40% services) Criteria • Tenderers must have prior relevant experience, be tax compliant, financially stable, insured and meet other standard requirements. • Tenderers must be able to demonstrate insight and understanding of what the project is trying to achieve. • Tenderers must be able to explain how they will meet requirements and propose an acceptable delivery timeline that is credible. • Tenderers will also be required to manage the handover of the fitted out materials and train people where relevant. Support and maintenance aspects will be relevant also. • A PSCS role will be required from tenderers. Trades proposed executing tasks reserved for registered professionals (e.g. electrical works) must be fully qualified. Required The contract will be for a single contractor leading a team of specialist providers, as required.
