NPL is developing a new measurement infrastructure based on a state-of-the-art implementation of an Yb optical lattice clock pair targeting continuous and autonomous operation. The reliability and autonomy of the system will depend heavily on the supporting laser technology. NPL has researched the supply market and identified only one manufacturer, Toptica Photonics AG, whose products are suited to serve in this application. The unique properties that exist in totality only in the Toptica Photonics solution are as follows. The lasers, which are based on semiconductor technology, are proven to be reliable without requirement for servicing forced downtime, as demonstrated in part by similar systems operated in the same application at NPL over the past 10 years. They are close to silent in operation, have auto-alignment functionality for long-term optimised operation, and are fully integrated and rack-mounted as is necessary to meet our physical requirement. The lasers meet or exceed all power and linewidth requirements and have prevision to satisfy further linewidth reduction through high-bandwidth actuation of the laser current and cavity piezo without compromising laser cavity design or necessitating additional frequency actuators which lead to additional optical power loss. The lasers are network-controlled via a Python-based SDK which provides compatibility with an existing Python-based control software infrastructure developed at NPL. Each wavelength is reached by emission from a single source, which is each directly applicable, or converted via second harmonic generation to reach the desired output wavelength. In the latter case the sub-harmonic light is simultaneously made available and will be used for frequency stabilisation and frequency measurement by femtosecond optical frequency combs. Single-source emitters also simplify the necessary frequency stabilisation and reliability in comparison to other approaches: systems relying on multiple slaved sources to make up the power requirement, aside from added complexity and component failure risk, necessitate additional measures to ensure reliable injection locking. Approaches to reach the desired wavelength which rely on non-linear sum- or difference-frequency generation between two distinct laser sources, e.g. combining ti:sapphire and fibre laser technologies, also add complexity to the stabilisation and wavelength control and are therefore not desirable.
